NG art container Gallery Project Descriptions

Paul Waddel Art School

I made this video in college in order to try and win a contest. I did not win. I went to art school for ten years. I just have a bachelor's degree. All of my socialization happened in the fantasy bubble of art school. I expect women to be aggressive and I learned to feel guilty about being a man.  Art school is good because it teaches students not to make naive mistakes. Art school is bad because it encourages derivative mistakes and validates those mistakes by reviewing historical precedence. Ten years of school and I can't even work at a coffee shop. When, I think of the thousands of artist that graduate from art school each year I wonder what we all are going to do with our expensive and esoteric educations.

If art school is a joke my video is a punch line.

Jay Van Buren Brooklyn is Watching

Our fascination with the virtual is a subject explored through Jay Van Buren's mixed realities project, Brooklyn is Watching. On display in the online world of Second Life , and at Don Carroll's actual Brooklyn gallery Jack the Pelican Presents , Van Buren has created a space where Second Life creations are subject to the critique of real live gallery visitors. A regularly updated blog and weekly podcasts are open to everyone to talk about Second Life developments and about the virtue of art production in Second Life .

Brooklyn is Watching speaks to the same issues addressed within the contemporary art scene. We are forced to engage with the implications of imparting and extracting meaning in our technologically driven society. Van Buren has described the project as "an artwork, a venue for critical dialogue, and a marketing vehicle." “Plus”, he is quick to note, “it's a hell of a lot of fun.” Sponsored by Boris Kizelshteyn's NY based Media Technology Company, Popcha. http://www.early-adopter.com

Joe Nanashe Internet Alphabet

This film is a systematic guide for the categorical breakdown of Internet pornography. Internet Alphabet presents the language of exploitation, titillation and the unusual. It is poetry in perversion. www.joenanashe.com

Andrew Hicks Not Doing

Not Doing is the story of a man sitting in a chair contemplating

his inaction. Layered video and audio clips are algorithmically

selected and manipulated to present an ongoing, non-repeating

environment of variation. www.andrewhicks.net

Jesse Jagtiani Oh Boy!

'Oh Boy!' deals with the confusion, conflicts and struggles which arise from the need to categorize gender and sexual identities in contemporary culture. It addresses the rapid development of technology and its unknown outcome in present day.

Benoît Dhennin 27

27 is a collection of self-portraits, sometimes taken through and with others.

They're about being myself, combining impulse from my life and experiments. The video shoot is an experiment from which post-production reveals inner parts. What I want to transmit from these inner parts to the spectators is the way I watch myself and bodies; it's an intimate eye that can be used by everybody.
